Painting is one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to completely transform the look of a room. Whether you are moving into a new home or creating a new look in an old room, a simple splash of color on your walls can make the difference between dull and dynamic.

Before you head to the store, Bill Hudson, product manager at KILZ Casual Colors offers a few tips for stress-free painting.

"Consider the space being painted, its lighting, moisture levels, and traffic flow when determining best sheen for your project," said Hudson. The difference between flat and semi-gloss could make a big difference in the look of the paint when it's on the wall.

Most paint brands offer several sheens. For ceilings and walls with minor surface imperfections, the minimal reflectance of a flat sheen looks best. A satin sheen provides a pearl-like finish that is durable enough for bathrooms, kids' rooms, trim and mildew prone areas like basements, mud and laundry rooms. Semi-gloss paint is as durable as the satin sheen, with an easier to clean finish that is perfect for kitchens. For the highest traffic areas, high gloss provides excellent durability in areas subject to scuffmarks and splashes, including cabinets and trim.

Generally, one gallon covers 300-350 square feet when painting over a smooth, sealed surface. For projects requiring more than a gallon, Hudson recommends intermixing the gallons. "The color matching computer gets close to the color chip, but can vary slightly from gallon to gallon. By combining the paint, you ensure uniform color on your walls," he said.

If painting over an existing color, many brands of paint will require several coats to adequately hide the existing color. To save time and money, look for paint that offers one-coat coverage.
