Italian monks principally developed this technique in the 17th Century, later duplicated by Italian and French craftsmen who applied Scagliola stone to many architectural applications. The formula used to achieve this authentic stone technique was kept extremely secretive, and as a result, the Italian craft had all but disappeared by the late 19th Century.
